Sinner and Sabalenka advance to the Cincinnati Open quarterfinals

Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open as did Carlos Alcaraz, who won in straight sets.

Sinner overcame a nearly three-hour weather delay to win 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) over Adrian Mannarino.

World number one Sinner, playing his first tournament since winning Wimbledon, recorded his 24th consecutive win on hardcourts.

He won the first set and leveled the second set when play resumed after rain. Mannarino's tough play briefly troubled Sinner, who was broken while trying to close out the game.

The second set went to a tiebreaker, where Sinner hit his 11th and 12th aces to seal the win.

Sinner will next face Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, who beat Benjamin Bonzi of France 6-4, 6-3.

Sabalenka, who had earlier been forced to three sets by Emma Raducanu, rallied after being broken in the second set to defeat Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-1, 7-5.

Sabalenka will meet former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, who beat Australian Open champion Madison Keys 6-7 (3/7), 6-4, 6-2.

Alcaraz easily defeated Italian Luca Nardi 6-1, 6-4. The second-seeded Spaniard has reached the final in his last six tournaments.

After winning the first set in 28 minutes, Alcaraz faltered slightly, losing his serve 4-2. Alcaraz then broke back and won the ninth game, which resulted in eight deuces, to take a 5-4 lead.

Alcaraz double-faulted on the first match point, before finishing the match with a volley.

In his next match, Alcaraz will face ninth seed Andrey Rublev from Russia.

French qualifier Terence Atmane pulled off the biggest upset of the day by defeating fourth seed Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, earning the biggest win of his career.
