Atmane qualified for the Cincinnati quarterfinals with the lowest ranking

World number 136 Terence Atmane has reached the Cincinnati Open quarterfinals as the lowest-ranked player since 152nd-ranked Borna Coric won the title in 2022.

Atmane pulled off the biggest upset and win of his career, defeating world number 4 Thomas Fritz in the last 16 of the Cincinnati Open.

He, who entered the Cincinnati Open from the qualifying round, managed to overcome defeat in the first set, to secure a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory, and advance to the quarterfinals.

"This is a crazy win for my young career," Atmane said. "So, I'm really at a loss for words right now. I just believed in myself. I believed I could beat Taylor Fritz tonight on Court 3, and this is what happened," Atmane said, as quoted by Cincinnati.com on Thursday.

Atmane had previously defeated Italian world number 22 Flavio Cobolli and Brazilian world number 52 Joao Fonseca after qualifying.

Prior to playing in the Cincinnati Open, Atmane had only won five times on the tour. However, after defeating Fritz, that number increased to nine. He is projected to rise to world number 93 in the next ATP rankings.

The victory over Fritz was Atmane's biggest victory in terms of opponent ranking. For Fritz, the loss to the Frenchman was his lowest-ranked opponent all season.
