Sonia Bermudez has been appointed as the new coach of the Spanish women's national team.

The Spanish Football Federation appointed Sonia Bermudez as the new coach of its women's national team, according to the RFEF's official website.

"Sonia Bermudez, the new national team coach, has played 63 matches for the national team and scored a total of 35 goals," the RFEF said in a statement on its official Instagram account.

"He will partner Iraia Iturregi, who has years of coaching experience and has managed 402 matches in the Primera Division," he continued.

The former Barcelona player replaces Montse Tome, whose contract expired after Spain's penalty shootout defeat to England in the Women's Euro 2025 final last month.
Bermudez takes the top job after previously managing the Spanish U-23 national team.

As a player, she won nine league titles during her playing career with Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Levante. The 40-year-old made 61 appearances for the Spanish women's national team.

He also captained the Spanish national team and featured at the 2015 World Cup, when La Roja finished bottom of their group.

Bermudez's predecessor, Tome, took over after the coach of the 2023 World Cup-winning Spanish women's national team, Jorge Vilda, was fired in September 2023 for supporting Luis Rubiales in the incident in which the former federation president forced a kiss on player Jenni Hermoso.

Under Tome's tutelage, the world champions won the women's Nations League in February 2024, before finishing fourth at the Paris Olympics.
