The Gaza war has had a devastating psychological impact on Israeli soldiers: 7 suicides in July alone.

Israeli Army Radio reported Thursday that "Roi Wasserstein, a reserve soldier in the 401st Armored Brigade, ended his life on Wednesday after suffering horrific trauma during his service."

She continued: "The army will not recognize him as having died in service," and he will be given a civilian funeral, as he was not in military service at the time of his suicide.

Roi, 24, served in the 401st Brigade's medical evacuation unit for more than 300 days during the war, according to the radio.

She added that he had been exposed to "very difficult events" during the war, including evacuating wounded and dead from the battlefield, and had completed his last reserve course in late May.

"His family and those close to him say that he shared his difficult experiences over the past few months, speaking about the horrors and painful scenes he went through leading up to his decision to end his life yesterday," according to the radio station.

According to the Hebrew newspaper Haaretz, with this soldier's suicide, "the number of Israeli soldiers who committed suicide this July alone has risen to 7."

On Monday, the Israeli occupation army announced that reserve soldier Ariel Taman took his life at his home in the settlement of Ofakim (south). During his service, his job was to identify the bodies of fallen soldiers.

Haaretz confirmed on Wednesday that the number of suicides among army personnel has risen since the start of the war of extermination against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.

She reported that 17 soldiers committed suicide (18 including Roy) since the beginning of 2025, 24 soldiers committed suicide in 2024 and 17 in 2023.

She attributed the high number of suicides to the fact that "Israel suffers from a severe shortage of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers."

"The army is not adept at dealing with discharged soldiers or reserve soldiers, and even more so with soldiers serving in the unit identifying casualties within its ranks," according to the newspaper.

She added that hundreds of psychologically ill patients enter the army's rehabilitation department every month, as many of them suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder following their participation in the war of extermination in Gaza.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a war of genocide in Gaza, including killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, ignoring all international calls and orders from the International Court of Justice to halt it.

The genocide, with American support, left more than 207,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 9,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and a famine that claimed the lives of many.

For decades, Israel has occupied Palestine and territories in Syria and Lebanon, and refuses to withdraw from these territories and establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, along the pre-1967 borders.
