The US is demanding that Nvidia pay a 15 percent commission on AI chip sales to China.

The United States (US) government has reportedly asked technology company Nvidia to pay a commission of 15 percent of the sales of artificial intelligence (AI) chips to China.

The New York Times and The Financial Times which stated that President Donald Trump's administration had ordered Nvidia and AMD to deposit 15 percent of their AI chip sales revenue to China to the US federal government.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang reportedly reached a deal with President Donald Trump days before the US Commerce Department granted permission for the two companies to sell AI chips to China.

Trump confirmed the news at a press conference on Monday (August 11), explaining his negotiations with Huang regarding commission payments for shipping AI chips to China.

"I said, 'Look, I want 20 percent to approve this for you,'" Trump said, referring to his negotiations with Huang.

"And he said, 'Can you make it 15?' So we negotiated a little deal," he added.

The request was approved. The US government then authorized shipments of Nvidia's H20 and AMD's MI308 chips to China.

Both chips are compact versions of their AI-focused GPUs, designed to comply with US export regulations to China.

After the Trump administration restricted AI chip sales to China in April 2025, Nvidia and AMD said last month they would resume chip shipments after receiving licenses.
