The US should undertake fair immigration regularization: DEPMH

 

Mexico City, June 1.-  Due to the “complicated, difficult, and often dramatic situation” experienced by migrants, the United States government should undertake “a fair, peaceful, and positive immigration regularization process for this sector,” said Guadalupe Torres Campos, head of the Episcopal Dimension of Pastoral Care of Human Mobility (DEPMH).

In a religious ceremony celebrating Saint John Baptist Scalabrini, patron saint of migrants, which was broadcast online from the Casa del Migrante in Juárez, the bishop of Ciudad Juárez commented that there must be a collective awareness "in favor" of this sector.

And in this context, he urged us to "overcome bad policies, overcome indifference, and criminalization," and put an end to "offenses" toward people on the move, and to "support them based on their dignity as people" during their journey.

Indifference

He explained that "being indifferent to the pain of others," in this case of people who leave their countries in search of better living conditions or fleeing violence, is not even considered mere statistics.

“As a Church, as a society, and as a government, we must not view migrants with indifference or as a number, a statistic. Instead, we must view migrants as brothers and sisters, as neighbors with dignity, as human beings, and who, in their need and in their complicated situation, need to be accompanied, and sometimes healed, supported, guided, and assisted in many ways; Saint John the Baptist Scalabrini did just that.”
