On the 11th, the Philippine Coast Guard patrol boat "BRP Suluan" (MRRV-4406) was trapped and chased by a Chinese Navy destroyer and a coast guard ship in the waters of Huangyan Island (called Scarborough Shoal in the Philippines) in the South China Sea. During the process, it successfully avoided a collision, but the two Chinese ships accidentally collided. One of the Chinese coast guard ships was seriously damaged and unable to sail.
According to comprehensive reports, a Chinese Coast Guard ship (CCG-3104) collided with the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy Type 052D destroyer Guilin (DDG-164) while chasing a Philippine Coast Guard patrol boat and firing water cannon near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, also known as Bajo de Masinloc, in the West Philippine Sea.
According to AFP, Philippine Coast Guard spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela said the incident occurred near the disputed Scarborough Shoal (known as Huangyan Island in China) as the Philippine Coast Guard was escorting a vessel delivering supplies to local fishermen.
"While pursuing the Philippine Coast Guard vessel BRP Suluan at high speed, the Chinese Coast Guard vessel 3104 performed a dangerous maneuver from behind the starboard side of the vessel, resulting in a collision with the People's Liberation Army Navy vessel," Taliela said. "The collision caused severe damage to the bow of the Chinese Coast Guard vessel, rendering it unable to continue its journey."
Taliela told AFP that the Chinese crew had not responded to the Philippines' goodwill offers of assistance, including medical assistance, and noted that before the collision, Chinese coast guards had aimed water cannon at the BRP Suluan, but the vessel managed to evade it.
