Protests in more than 300 US cities against Trump's attempt to manipulate the electoral map

Thousands rallied at more than 300 protest events across the country Saturday against President Donald Trump and his party's efforts to manipulate electoral maps to maintain control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, a key requirement for the right-wing project to proceed in the United States.

The national day of action took place in more than 34 states under the banner of “Fight Trump’s Snatching” and was organized by various national progressive organizations including Indivisible, Public Citizen, the Working Families Party, MoveOn, and unions such as the CWA Communications Union, women’s rights union, and the gay community union, among others, to denounce that “Trump is trying to steal the 2026 election by rigging the system and changing the electoral maps.”

They condemned attempts to redraw electoral maps to create more Republican-controlled seats and reduce Democratic-controlled legislative districts—an effort that began in Texas at Trump's direction and under the direction of loyal Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

That effort has been halted for now by a dramatic escape by dozens of Democratic state legislators from his state two weeks ago, seeking to prevent the necessary quorum in the state legislature to approve the new maps. Trump and Republicans have indicated they will attempt to do the same in other Republican-controlled states. In response, Democratic governors in California, New York, and Illinois, among others, have threatened to do the same in response.

The largest protest took place in Austin, the capital of Texas, where a cast of leading Democrats from that state insisted before several thousand people that this battle is no longer just a local dispute. “While this fight began in Texas, it doesn’t end here. This isn’t just about redrawing districts or the politics of one state. This is about the future of our democracy,” said Drucilla Tigner, director of Texas for All , The Guardian reported . Texas Democratic U.S. Representatives Greg Casar and Lloyd Doggett, along with former Representative Beto O’Rourke, gave speeches about the urgency of stopping what they called an assault on democracy.
