Urban planners propose solutions to regulate traffic on the Rapid Transit System

Tijuana, August 29.- The traffic chaos on Tijuana's Vía Rápida Oriente highway, where cars heading to the San Ysidro border crossing converge with those traveling to other areas of the city, has led local planners to propose various solutions that go beyond superficial interventions.

According to urban planning specialists, the traffic conflicts on this arterial road are not only due to the high volume of vehicles, but also to a combination of structural and behavioral factors. The lack of clear lane boundaries toward the gate allows drivers to try to merge at the last minute, creating traffic jams that clog the road.

The problem is exacerbated by the rigidity of the current infrastructure, where the existing bridge concentrates incompatible vehicular flows in a confined space, while drivers, faced with the lack of order, resort to "shortcuts" that exacerbate traffic chaos. Among the proposals analyzed, the extension of the existing bridge on the left side to connect it to the right side, descending directly to the slow lane or the right lane before the median strip, stands out. This modification could allow for better lane confinement and avoid vehicle crossings at the most critical point.

However, experts warn that this alternative requires exhaustive technical studies and assessments of its economic and urban impacts before any implementation.
