US warns of possible "violent" protests in Mexico over elections

The United States government warned this Friday that demonstrations and other political gatherings could occur during the June 2 elections in Mexico, noting that "violent demonstrations have occurred in the past."

In an alert issued by the State Department, U.S. citizens were warned that a strong military and police presence is expected.

He urged travelers from the United States to avoid participating in demonstrations that authorities may consider political, as Mexican law prohibits political activities by foreign citizens, and participation may result in detention or deportation.

The US government reiterated that the demonstrations can be unpredictable.
