Mexico City, May 31 – The U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, published a message on the social network X this Saturday in which he emphasized that the bilateral relationship is built “on the basis of respect, cooperation, coordination, and collaboration.”
One day after the telephone conversation between Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in which they addressed central issues of the common agenda, the White House envoy affirmed that under the leadership of President Donald Trump and Secretary Rubio, his administration is working "24/7 with Mexico to strengthen the Mexico-U.S. relationship, based on respect, cooperation, coordination, and collaboration."
On Friday, Foreign Minister De la Fuente spoke by phone with Secretary Rubio. During the conversation, he expressed Mexico's firm opposition to the proposed 3.5 percent tax on remittances sent by Mexican migrants from the U.S. De la Fuente emphasized the vital dependence of thousands of Mexican families on these remittances and called the measure unacceptable.
As part of their diplomatic strategy, Mexican legislators will travel to Washington next week to discuss this issue directly with their U.S. counterparts.
