Users can now send messages directly in the Spotify app

Spotify has introduced an in-app messaging feature, in an effort to make the audio streaming platform feel more like social media for consuming music and podcast content.

Spotify users often share song and podcast links through other platforms.

With this new feature, Spotify wants these interactions to happen directly within the app, while also keeping a history of shared content so it's easier to find again.

The messaging feature is only available for private conversations. Users can only initiate chats with people they've previously shared content with, such as through collaborative playlists , the "Jam" or "Blend" features, or with other Family or Duo plan members.

Chat requests still need to be approved by the recipient before the conversation can begin.

Spotify also allows chat requests to be sent via Spotify links outside the app, such as on Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, and Snapchat. Additionally, users can invite their contacts with a special link.
