Mexicali, March 19.- The Mexican recurve archery team, which includes Baja California native Luis "Abuelo" Álvarez, secured a spot at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador by finishing fourth in the 2022 Puerto Rico Cup.
Mexicans Emilio Treviño, Jesús Flores, and “Abuelo” Álvarez, although they did not qualify for medals in the event that awards points for the world and Olympic rankings, managed to position Mexico for San Salvador 2023, which is the first stop in the Olympic process leading to Paris 2024.
In the semifinals, Mexico lost 6-2 to Guatemala in a duel in which the Mexicans won the first series 53-51. However, they declined, and the Guatemalans advanced to the final. In the bronze medal game, Colombia won 5-1, leaving the Aztecs in fourth place.
In the team event, Mexico secured twelve spots for San Salvador 2023, with two recurve teams and two compound teams in both categories.
