Mexico City, October 5.—In a frank allusion to the measure established by Twitter's new owner, billionaire Elon Musk, who announced he will charge eight dollars a month to verify accounts, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador emphasized: "I'm waiting to see if they're going to release the little bird."
Thus, he asked the magnate to clean up the social network before charging users so as not to offer a junk product. "I haven't seen anything yet, except that they want to charge, right? Yes, but they just have to give us proof first that they're going to be a trustworthy and ethical medium."
During this Friday's morning press conference, the president addressed the strategy Musk announced after acquiring the platform, where large numbers of so-called bots and fake accounts have been reported. Paying for the service will include verifying this type of content among its benefits.
"He's not going to make him pay, but let's see, first, a truce, for a year to show that Twitter has been cleaned up and that there are no more bots, that no one is being deceived, that there is transparency, that it's a golden rule of democracy, that there are freedoms, that no one will be censored and that there will be objectivity, professionalism, that people will speak the truth or that what is true will be transmitted."
López Obrador stated that the company must guarantee all users' right to express themselves and demonstrate, and avoid censorship. "This gentleman can do it, because it's clear he has courage; of course, it's for grown-ups."
He indicated that it's understandable that the process will take time, as nothing changes overnight. "But as a businessman, he must know that he must first demonstrate that what he offers is of quality; he must first demonstrate that, and not try to put a junk product on the market and charge a high price for it."
