Mexico City, February 9.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador proposed pausing Mexico's relationship with Spain, at least until the end of his six-year term , because he believes companies from that nation have acted advantageously, under the protection of political power.
He clarified that this is a public statement, not a formal diplomatic declaration.
"It's like we need a break; there's no need to get angry, it's just a matter of taking it slow. I've already said it, a pause. It's good for us to take a break for a while because what happened ... It's a comment, it's a conversation, a discussion, I mean, so people have all the elements," he explained.
At the morning press conference, while referring to the objectives of the constitutional reform initiative on electricity, promoted by his government to eliminate sources of corruptionAMLO proposes a "pause" in Mexico's relationship with Spain, he introduced the topic of Spanish companies and then spoke about the pause in bilateral relations.
After his presentation, he emphasized that it is a comment that would in itself be criticized by internationalists, who criticize him for being from Tepetatitán, Tabasco, and call him a villager .
"The pause is: let's give ourselves time to respect each other and not be seen as a land of conquest. In other words, we do want good relations with all governments, with all the peoples of the world, but we don't want them to steal from us . Just as the Spanish don't want anyone from any country—and they're right—to steal from them, neither do we."
"So, we'll wait, there's still a long way to go. I mean, Calderón had Repsol; Iberdrola comes from Fox, and before that, when they started with the whole electricity reform, then Calderón, Repsol, Repsol was given this Burgos contract, and as it's established, it can be proven, they didn't care about extracting gas, what mattered to them was the construction contract.
