AMLO recalls his impeachment 18 years ago

Mexico City. April 8.—President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recalled on social media this Saturday that yesterday marked the 18th anniversary of the impeachment proceedings against him instituted by the Chamber of Deputies. He noted that the impeachment was ordered by former President Vicente Fox "with the complicity of the justices" of the Supreme Court of Justice.

“On April 7, 2005, PRIAN legislators stripped me of my immunity on Fox's orders and with the complicity of the Supreme Court justices. The young people who turned 18 yesterday—the age of majority—were being born; for them, I repeat the speech from that occasion,” said the president, who posted a nine-minute video on YouTube of the speech he gave that day.

On the day of the impeachment, López Obrador, then head of government of the Federal District, issued a message from the House floor criticizing the collusion between businessmen and the PAN, PRI, and PVEM parties, which, at the behest of Vicente Fox Quesada, had withdrawn his constitutional protection due to an alleged violation of the land-use regulations in the nation's capital.

López Obrador submitted to the process and refused to pay a fine of 1.811 billion pesos, which would be covered with public funds.
