Authorities make mistake of presuming decrease in homicides: CCE

Mexicali, June 9. Authorities continue to make the mistake of offering "glowing figures" regarding intentional homicides amid a poor perception of security, said Octavio Sandoval López, president of the Mexicali Business Coordinating Council (CCE).

He acknowledged that there was a decrease in March and April , but it was very small , so it was not noticed by citizens.

“In the case of Mexicali, they say homicides have decreased, and suddenly there are three shootings in one day ,” he said.

The business leader recalled that on Thursday, June 5, there was a shooting at Kilometer 57 and two others in Mexicali, resulting in two deaths and two injuries.

"We have a poor public perception, and that's when it clashes with the authorities' message ," he said.

Sandoval López acknowledged that there is coordination, but it has not translated into the arrest of those who commit homicides.

"Criminals aren't arrested in the act, so the police need better equipment," he said.

Budgets for preventive police forces need to be expanded, he said, and acquiring more technology should be a priority.
