Carrying a cell phone and spending a long time in the toilet increases the risk of hemorrhoids.

The habit of taking your cell phone to the toilet without realizing it actually increases the risk of developing hemorrhoids, according to a new study published in PLoS One.

Quoted from Health, Monday, this study stated that 46 percent of people who use cell phones in the toilet are more likely to experience gastrointestinal conditions based on colonoscopy results.

Sitting longer on the toilet restricts the flow of blood and presses on the veins, increasing the risk of hemorrhoids.

"This study is very timely because cell phone use seems to be ubiquitous," said Brian C. Jacobson, MD, MPH, a gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Jacobson emphasized that reading any material on the toilet is associated with hemorrhoids, not because of the cell phone issue but because of the longer time spent sitting on the toilet.

Researchers analyzed the cell phone habits of patients visiting Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for colonoscopies by surveying 125 people aged 45 and over about how often they used their cell phones while on the toilet and comparing them to their colonoscopy results.
