Tijuana, September 26.- The Tijuana Cultural Center will screen the documentary "Fiesta en La Misión" this Sunday, September 28, as part of the first celebration of Baja California Heritage Day, an initiative that brings together more than 50 public and private organizations dedicated to the state's cultural and natural heritage.
The screening will take place at 4:00 p.m. in the Carlos Monsiváis Room with free admission, as part of a series of free activities taking place simultaneously throughout the state.
The 40-minute film, directed by Tijuana-based anthropologist Alexandra Hernández Borja, documents a celebration that has taken place continuously in Baja California since 1979. It responds to a process of creating traditions promoted by the Mexican state between the 1960s and 1980s to foster national identity on the northern border.
Hernández Borja, a PhD in Cultural Studies from El Colef and a professor at UABC, explains in her work how activities such as rodeos, calabaceado dances, and Mexican cuisine convey the formative and normative versions that underpin community memory and identity.
