CHIEF1300, a centrifuge with a capacity of 300 times Earth's gravity

 

 China on Monday (September 29) launched the world's largest capacity centrifuge, capable of producing 300 times Earth's gravity for loads of up to 20 tons.


The machine, codenamed CHIEF1300, is one of the core components of the Centrifugal Hypergravity and Interdisciplinary Experiment Facility (CHIEF) currently under construction in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, east China.


The machine can be used for cutting-edge research that includes deep ocean and deep Earth resource extraction, disaster mitigation and prevention, underground waste disposal, and the synthesis of new materials.
