The Cyberspace Administration of China has banned domestic technology companies from purchasing artificial intelligence (AI) chips made by Nvidia, a technology company headquartered in California, United States.
According to a Financial Times report cited by TechCrunch on Wednesday (September 17), the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) also instructed technology companies such as ByteDance and Alibaba to stop testing and ordering RTX Pro 6000D servers, Nvidia devices specifically designed for the Chinese market.
The Chinese government in late August 2025 had asked local companies to reduce their reliance on foreign-made chips and switch to domestically made products.
The ban on purchasing AI chips from Nvidia is expected to have a major impact on China's technology ecosystem.
While Huawei and Alibaba have designed their own AI chips, Nvidia remains the global market leader, with its chips recognized as some of the most advanced on the market.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed his disappointment with the Chinese government's policies.
"We can only serve a market if a country wants us," Huang said.
"I'm disappointed by what happened, but they have a big agenda to address between China and the United States. And I'm being patient. We will continue to support the Chinese government and companies as they see fit," he continued.
