Christmas tree recycling centers installed in Mexicali

Mexicali, January 4.- From Monday, January 3, to Friday, January 22, fourteen collection centers for Christmas trees will be open to prevent them from being burned or discarded in public spaces.

The pine trees will be shredded and used to make compost and fertilizer. The centers will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., except for the Hélice Foundation center located in Rancho de Ciclo, on the airport road, which is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Some 5,000 trees were imported last Christmas season, reported Manuel Zamora, Director of Environmental Protection for the 24th City Council of Mexicali. They expect that 80 percent of the population will come to one of the collection centers to dispose of their tree.

He said the poor disposal of Christmas trees leads to litter in vacant lots and streets, in addition to potential fires, which worsens the city's environmental conditions during this time.
