Despite progress, gender gaps still exist in Mexico.

Mexico City, November 26. Men and women should put on “purple glasses,” that is, observe the world through gender inequalities , socially assigned roles and stereotypes, and evaluate others equally, according to researchers and experts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) during the talk “University Women: Breaking Glass Ceilings.”

María de la Luz Jimena de Teresa de Oteyza, a member of the UNAM Governing Board, emphasized the need to better value women's professional work.

The researcher at the Institute of Mathematics also pointed out that women are always asked to do more ; they must constantly demonstrate that they are better or as good at their jobs as men, but men are not evaluated in the same way.

Regarding Teresa de Oteyza, she commented: "We must be aware of biases when evaluating and promoting. Looking at things through 'purple lenses' helps; we must promote diversity because it enriches us."

During the meeting, the moderator of the event, Martha Alejandra Tepale Gómez, a representative of this organization, considered it essential for young women to see that the so-called glass ceilings can be broken .

Speaking at the event, Lorena Rodríguez León, director of the Faculty of Economics, explained that there are still gaps that have not been closed, for example, that women earn 40 percent less than men, and that fewer women hold public office than men.

Furthermore, the country needs a change in public policies, such as encouraging their participation in child-rearing , but this is difficult if they are only granted five days of leave to care for the baby.

In this regard, she emphasized, the proposal to create the National Care System could be key to eliminating those factors that limit women's growth.
