French center-back Samuel Umtiti has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31.
Umtiti, known for his role as a defensive stalwart for FC Barcelona and the French national team, has decided to end his career after battling a series of injuries that have hampered his performance in recent years. He last played for Lille OSC in Ligue 1, having previously represented Lecce in Serie A and Olympiacos in Greece.
In his official statement, Umtiti expressed his gratitude and pride for his career journey.
"After an intense career full of ups and downs, the time has come to say goodbye... I gave everything with passion and I have no regrets. I want to thank all the clubs, presidents, coaches, and players who have worked with me," Umtiti said in an Instagram post.
Umtiti's career peaked when he was part of the French national team that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
With Barcelona, he also won two La Liga titles and three Copa del Rey titles. However, a chronic knee injury he's suffered since 2018 has limited his appearances and forced him to struggle to return to his best form.
FC Barcelona, through its official account, expressed its gratitude for the contribution and happiness that has been given to the club and its fans.
"Thank you, Samuel, for all your contributions and the wonderful memories at Camp Nou. We wish you the best in your future endeavors."
The most memorable moment of Umtiti's career, especially his crucial goal against Belgium in the 2018 World Cup semi-final.
With Umtiti's retirement, football has lost one of the greatest defenders to ever grace the pitch.
