Mexico City, September 22. Given the demonstrations in his favor, Hugo López-Gatell also wants to .
–How can you be a candidate if the idea was woven, if López-Gatell was accused of the excess deaths that occurred during the pandemic?
– The source of this hatred is the conservative thinking championed by certain right-wing political parties and corporate media outlets serving the interests of large national and transnational corporations, which have been deeply undermined by public health policies and other issues that are at the heart of the transformation.
But López-Gatell has another perspective: "This hateful thinking doesn't represent the sensitivity, the feelings, the ideals of the population as a whole. There are wealthy people, moderately wealthy people, and less wealthy people; there are businesspeople in Mexico City and the country who aren't represented by these corporate media outlets and hate speech."
–To what extent did the pandemic trigger your interest in governing the city?
–I'd say it was more of a catalyst than a trigger for my decision . During the pandemic, like never before in my life, I felt a sense of responsibility to protect people and put my skills at their service. I realized that my social commitment encompassed much more than a technical or limited response to health. I gained a deeper understanding of the social inequality and social suffering I was already familiar with; the difference is that I was able to confirm my ability to change part of this reality.
“History gave us an opportunity to understand people's feelings, and it came in the midst of a tragic, very difficult situation that we all experienced, unexpected to a certain extent, and that devastated everyone, the entire world. We began to identify people's daily lives: whether they are employed, underemployed, or unemployed, whether they have family or social networks, whether they have decent housing, whether they are progressing economically and socially or not—this is the fundamental determinant of how to respond to an onslaught like COVID.
