Meta releases Teen Accounts feature on Facebook and Messenger globally

Meta on Thursday (25/9) announced the expansion of the availability of Teen Accounts to young Facebook and Messenger users globally after making the feature available to users of its social media platforms in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.

Teen Accounts, which come with built-in protections and parental controls for young users, first launched on Instagram last fall, according to a TechCrunch report on Thursday (September 25).

The feature was introduced after Meta and other social media platform providers were criticized by United States lawmakers for not providing enough protection to young users of their platforms.

With the introduction of Teen Accounts on Facebook and Messenger, restrictions on access to inappropriate content and unwanted contact automatically apply to teen accounts on both platforms.

Platform users under 16 years of age require parental permission to change any settings.

Teens can only receive messages from people they already follow or have messaged before.

Teens' Stories posts can only be viewed and replied to by their friends. Tags , mentions , and comments are also restricted to accounts they follow or are friends with.

Additionally, teen users will receive reminders to stop using the platform after one hour per day, and will automatically enter Quiet Mode at night.
