Monreal calls for overcoming the "dead end" to carry out the recall exercise

Mexico City, December 21.—It is necessary to overcome this “dead end,” engage in dialogue, and seek legal, economic, and political solutions to carry out the recall process, as “it is not advisable to take fatalistic positions,” said Ricardo Monreal Ávila, Morena’s parliamentary coordinator in the Senate.

The senator affirmed that the National Electoral Institute has more than enough resources to organize the referendum and cannot claim a lack of resources to fail to fulfill its constitutional obligations, much less change the dates established by law for the exercise, because it would be committing a serious offense by usurping functions of the Legislative Branch.

Ricardo Monreal insisted that the INE overstepped its powers and violated the principle of legality, because there is not a single article of the law that allows them to postpone the recall of the mandate and now "they are on a path of no return," so we must find solutions.

The INE, he reiterated, is not right, justified, or authorized, as it is not within its power to postpone the exercise or invade the sphere of powers of the Legislative Branch, which was the one that decided the date, procedure, and mechanisms of this new institution called recall.

In addition, he said, he can reduce his budget and generate savings by cutting salaries, eliminating travel abroad and within the country, and avoiding excesses and hiring too many advisors.

These measures, according to the president of the INE, Lorenzo Córdova, are insubstantial and insufficient, "but they must start somewhere" for the practical purposes of fulfilling their constitutional obligation, asserted Monreal Ávila.

The decision not to engage in dialogue is too risky: Monreal

The legislator considered the decision by the General Council of the National Electoral Institute to not engage in dialogue with the Federal Executive Branch, the Secretary of the Interior, or the head of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit before postponing the election too risky and closed-minded.
