OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a series of new policies for ChatGPT users, including major changes to the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot's interactions with users under 18.
"We prioritize safety over privacy and freedom for teens. This is a new and powerful technology, and we believe minors need significant protection," Sam said, as quoted by Tech Crunch.
This new policy specifically targets conversations about sexual topics and self-harm.
ChatGPT no longer allows flirtatious conversations with underage users, and has additional restrictions regarding discussions about suicide.
If a teenager uses ChatGPT to imagine a suicide scenario, the service will attempt to contact their parents or, in severe cases, local police.
This change comes amid a lawsuit against OpenAI from the parents of Adam Raine, a teenager who died by suicide after months of interacting with ChatGPT. Character.AI is also facing a similar lawsuit in another case.
