Gemini became a popular app thanks to its Nano Banana image editing feature.

Use of Google's artificial intelligence (AI) app, Gemini, has surged since the launch of its Nano Banana image editing app last August, which received positive reviews from users for simplifying complex edits and producing more realistic images.

According to the latest data from app information firm Appfigures, reported by Tech Crunch on Wednesday, the Gemini app rose to the top of the global app charts with a 45 percent month-on-month increase in downloads throughout September.

Despite only being mid-month, Gemini has already racked up 12.6 million downloads, up from 8.7 million in August.

Prior to September, Gemini's highest ranking in the US App Store was third place on January 28, 2025.

However, after the release of Nano Banana, Gemini reached second place on September 8th, then rose to first place on September 12th, overtaking OpenAI's ChatGPT, where it remains today. Currently, no other AI app is in the App Store's top 10.

Appfigures also noted Gemini as one of the five most popular iPhone apps in 108 countries globally.

On Google Play, Gemini shot up from 26th place on September 8th to the number two app in the United States last Monday. However, ChatGPT still holds the top spot on the Android platform.
