OpenAI will add parental control features to ChatGPT

OpenAI has promised to release a parental control feature for ChatGPT within the next month, the company said.

Once the feature is available, parents can link their personal ChatGPT account to their teen's account. From there, parents can determine how ChatGPT responds to their child and disable certain features, including memory and conversation history.

Additionally, ChatGPT will generate automatic alerts when it detects a teen is in a "moment of acute distress." According to OpenAI, "input from experts will guide this feature to support trust between parents and teens."

The announcement regarding parental controls comes after OpenAI was sued in the first known wrongful death lawsuit against an AI company.

In a lawsuit filed last week, Matt and Maria Raine, the parents of a teenager who committed suicide this year, accused ChatGPT of knowing about four previous failed suicide attempts before helping their son plan his death.

The Raine family says ChatGPT provided their son, Adam, with information about specific suicide methods and even gave advice on how to hide neck injuries sustained from a previous failed attempt.
