Senate receives bill to extend Armed Forces' term in public security

Mexico City, September 14.- Ricardo Monreal Ávila, president of the Political Coordination Board, announced that the Senate has received the bill extending the deadline for the Armed Forces to participate in public security tasks.

Through his social media accounts, the senator announced that the document will be forwarded to the Joint Committees on Constitutional Affairs and Legislative Studies, Second.

As with every constitutional reform, the coordinator of the Morena Parliamentary Group emphasized, the legislative procedure will be applied in all its stages.

The draft decree amends the Fifth Transitory Article of the Decree amending, adding to, and repealing various provisions of the Political Constitution regarding the National Guard, published on March 26, 2019.

It proposes that, for 10 years following the entry into force of the Decree—instead of the five years established by the current provision—while the National Guard develops its structure, capabilities, and territorial implementation, the President of the Republic may use the Permanent Armed Forces for public security tasks in an extraordinary, regulated, supervised, subordinate, and complementary manner.

Furthermore, it specifies that such participation must have a focus on respect for human rights.
