Sentences sought for soldiers accused of sexual violence 20 years ago

Acapulco, October 17.—The hearing in the Inés Fernández Ortega case, scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Second District Court of the Federal Judicial Branch, on Boulevard de las Naciones, was suspended this Monday morning.

Fernández Ortega initiated criminal proceedings in 2002 for sexual violence against two members of the Mexican Army, one of whom died during a fight at Military Camp No. 1.

This Monday, upon leaving the Federal Judicial Branch, Rogelio Téliz García, a lawyer with the Tlachinollan Human Rights Center, expressed concern that the hearing had been postponed until 1:00 p.m. on October 24th, as a military officer was scheduled to attend for events that occurred in 2002, for which a verdict has not yet been issued.

Téliz García clarified that this was a final hearing in a criminal case that began in 2002, leading to the arrest of military officer Hugo Humberto García de León in 2003, and has been under indictment since that date.

He mentioned that "this soldier is being held at Military Camp 1 in Mexico City. He has to go to a federal court in that city, and there was no validation, they didn't accept it, and they didn't have time to hold the hearing today." Rogelio Téliz García

The lawyer expressed that "we are concerned that this matter remains unresolved. We still don't have a verdict. It's been 20 years since 2002, and Ms. Inés continues to be a victim of injustice. There is no verdict in her favor. She continues to be revictimized."

Inés Fernández Ortega was accompanied by social organizations, lawyers from Tlachinollan, as well as Valentina Rosendo Cantú, a Me'phaa indigenous woman herself, who also initiated criminal proceedings with members of the Mexican Army for rape, in events that occurred in 2002 in the Guerrero Mountains.
