The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs handles the misuse of AI content by referring to the ITE Law.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital has adopted the Electronic Information and Transactions Law as a reference in addressing the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI)-based content .

"We view AI content as still referring to statutory regulations, with the ITE Law as our reference," said Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Supervision at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, when met at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs office in Jakarta on Wednesday.

In addition to Law Number 1 of 2024 concerning the Second Amendment to Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology uses Circular Letter of the Minister of Communication and Information Technology Number 9 of 2023 concerning the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence as a guideline in handling issues related to the use of AI.

Alexander said the government is preparing a roadmap and specific regulations regarding the adoption of AI technology.

Before specific regulations on the development and use of AI were issued, the government adhered to existing regulations in handling violations related to the use of AI.

"This AI issue is still ongoing. We're preparing new regulations for the roadmap . We'll see what the regulations will look like later. But our guidelines remain under the supervision of the ITE Law," Alexander said.
