The next US ambassador must conduct himself according to diplomatic rules: De la Fuente

Mexico City, December 27. The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Juan Ramón de la Fuente , expressed confidence that the next United States ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, will conduct himself under universal diplomatic rules that allow for a respectful and cooperative relationship that benefits both countries.

"Diplomacy is diplomacy ; it has rules, and they are universally accepted, regardless of the background of the person practicing them," said the Mexican foreign policy chief during President Claudia Sheinbaum's daily press conference.

De la Fuente acknowledged that although Johnson does not come from a conventional diplomatic background , this will not be an impediment to building a respectful and effective relationship between the two nations.

In this regard, he assured that the Mexican side will seek to clearly convey the constitutional principles of national foreign policy, which are "the best compass for conducting diplomatic relations with any country or in any multilateral forum."

"I'm confident that we'll be able to work with him, as with all the other ambassadors, in a way that's reasonable, respectful, and effective," he added.

On December 10, Trump announced the nomination of Johnson, a retired colonel, former Central Intelligence Agency ( CIA ) officer, and former U.S. Army special forces officer whose tours included combat in El Salvador in the 1980s and in the Balkans.
