Tijuana, October 4.- Thriller theater has few successful productions in Mexico. venturing into this type of narrative, where intrigue and mystery are the fundamental elements, is challenging for the cast and extremely engaging for the audience.
A piece of this genre, premiered in the 60s, is brought to Tijuana by the Tijuana Cultural Center (Cecut), an institution of the federal Ministry of Culture, as part of its 40th anniversary. Sola en la oscuridad, starring actress Itatí Cantoral, will have two performances in this city and promises to thrill audiences with the story of Susy Hendrix, a blind woman threatened by an uncertain danger.
British writer Frederick Knott premiered this shocking thriller on Broadway, and just a few months later, Audrey Hepburn brought this story to life on film, a role that earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 1967. Since then, the play has been performed in various cities around the world, arriving in Tijuana in 2022.
"I'm very happy that this first tour after the pandemic includes Tijuana," said the actress, who is immersed in a performance that transcends the rudimentary characters of the television dramas she's used to, to place herself in an unusual story, in which she will fight criminals, without her sense of sight.
Three dangerous criminals have their sights set on the innocent housewife. Their motive seems to be grim, as it appears to contain a particularly valuable doll. To confront this dangerous situation, Mrs. Hendrix, played by Itatí, must rely on all four senses she still possesses.
In a country with a long history of femicides, starring in a plot fraught with this imminent threat draws audience attention. “At the moment I'm playing something, representing it, it's also happening in real life—there's a woman being murdered,” the actress reflects.
