New York, May 19.- Thirty-eight gun control groups are urging lawmakers to act immediately following the latest shooting that left 10 dead Saturday in a racially motivated attack at a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood of Buffalo, New York, The Hill reported Wednesday.
In a letter to President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the groups first called on House Democrats to "commit $750 million to evidence-based Community Violence Initiatives," which they said could "break cycles of violence by addressing their root causes through significant investments in community-led programs."
They then urged Senate Democrats to "live up to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's promise to hold a Senate floor debate" and vote on legislation to expand background checks for all gun purchases.
They also want leaders to address the "Charleston loophole" that allows gun purchases to be completed after three business days, even with an incomplete background check.
"Following the most recent racist act of domestic terrorism in Buffalo, New York, and the rise in gun violence across the country, we are calling on you to immediately do everything in your power to fulfill the promises you make to voters every election year," the groups wrote in their letter.
