While Guerrero deals with 'Otis,' a 4.4 magnitude earthquake is recorded in Zihuatanejo.

The National Seismological Service reported a magnitude 4.4 earthquake in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, on Wednesday morning; the magnitude was revised after an initial measurement of 5.

The quake, recorded at 11:06 a.m. with its epicenter 28 km southwest of this municipality, occurred just as the state was dealing with the onslaught of Hurricane Otis, which hit Acapulco this Thursday as a Category 5 storm.

Specifically, due to the damage in Guerrero, Sky Alert reported that most of its seismic sensors are out of service in the region, making it impossible to alert the population in the event of an earthquake.

"The areas most affected by this disconnection include: San Marcos, Ayutla, Cuajinicuilapa, Acapulco, Coyuca de Benítez, Atoyac de Álvarez, San Jerónimo, Tecpan, Petatlán, and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo," the text states.

No speaker activation was required.

Meanwhile, the Mexican Seismic Alert System (SASMex) indicated that the earthquake did not warrant a seismic alert because the energy estimate in the first few seconds did not exceed pre-established levels. Its nearest sensor is located on the border of Guerrero and Michoacán, 45 km from Huetamo.
