A recent medical study has revealed some unexpected risks caused by antihistamines used to treat some allergic conditions

The American Geriatrics Society noted that a study conducted by scientists from the University of Toronto in Canada revealed that some first-generation antihistamines, such as Diphenhydramine, may increase the risk of delirium and cognitive impairment in older adults during hospitalizations.

Scientists reached these conclusions after analyzing data from more than 328,000 patients over the age of 65 from 17 Canadian hospitals.

The results showed that patients who were frequently prescribed these medications were 41% more likely to develop delirium than those who rarely received them.

Researchers warn that sedating antihistamines can cause confusion and trigger acute brain damage, especially in patients with physical weakness.

The study authors urged physicians to exercise caution when using these drugs to treat the elderly and to seek safer alternatives to avoid the risks associated with cognitive decline and dementia.

Doctors warn that some types of anti-allergy medications can cause symptoms such as dizziness or impaired concentration, so caution should be exercised when using them and avoid taking them while driving.
