The study found that drinking just one glass of water can activate the mouth's natural defense mechanisms within an hour, improving up to seven indicators associated with dental health, according to Frontiers in Oral Health.
The study included 105 children between the ages of 5 and 10 who underwent preventive dental checkups. They were divided into three groups:
The group drank 200 ml of water,
Another one drank 200 ml of apple juice,
While the third group did not receive any drinks.
After about 45 to 60 minutes, the researchers analyzed the saliva samples to measure pH and levels of enzymes, immunoglobulins, and insulin. The results showed that the children who drank water had better oral parameters, with lower levels of acidity and enzymes that erode tooth enamel compared to the other groups.
Scientists explained that water helps quickly restore the balance of saliva, reducing oral acidity and enhancing natural immunity against cavities and gum disease. The researchers emphasized that replacing sugary drinks with water is a simple, economical, and effective way to maintain oral health in children.
