Calls for a ceasefire in Gaza...and Egypt stresses the need to begin reconstruction

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and French President Emmanuel Macron stressed the need for a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the realization of a two-state solution, during a phone call between bin Salman and Macron, according to the official Saudi Press Agency.

According to the agency, the call addressed developments in the Gaza Strip and efforts to end the war there and enhance security and stability in the Middle East.

Bin Salman and Macron stressed "the need to immediately alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the brotherly Palestinian people and achieve a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip," noting "the importance of initiating practical steps to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution."

Palestinian invitation

In turn, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for consolidating the ceasefire in Gaza and adhering to the first phase of US President Donald Trump's plan.

This came during his meeting in Ramallah with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher, according to the official WAFA news agency.

Abbas stressed the need to adhere to the first phase of the Trump plan, which includes consolidating the ceasefire, a prisoner exchange, the entry of aid, Israel's withdrawal from Gaza, the implementation of reconstruction efforts, and the Israeli government's halting of its efforts to undermine the Palestinian Authority and the two-state solution.

He affirmed the readiness of the State of Palestine's institutions to assume control of the Gaza Strip and connect it to the West Bank, with Arab and international support and in coordination with relevant authorities. He expressed the State of Palestine's readiness to work with President Trump and all mediators and partners to complete the next phase of the ceasefire, leading to a lasting peace in accordance with international peace resolutions.

He stressed the importance of the role of the United Nations and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in securing aid and continuing services to Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem, and host countries.

For his part, Fletcher briefed President Abbas on the results of his visit to Gaza, the humanitarian situation there, and the United Nations' efforts to deliver aid.

Implementation guarantee

Jordan's King Abdullah II stressed on Sunday the need to ensure the implementation and adherence to the agreement to end the war in the Gaza Strip, during a phone call with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, according to a statement from the Royal Court.

The statement said that King Abdullah stressed "the need to ensure the implementation of the agreement to end the war in Gaza in all its stages, and to adhere to the ceasefire in order to achieve the desired calm." He also emphasized "the need to intensify international efforts to respond to the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and to deliver aid to all areas without interruption."

The King of Jordan warned of "the danger of unilateral measures in the West Bank and Jerusalem," stressing "the importance of working to create a political horizon to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution (Palestinian and Israeli)."

He expressed his appreciation for Norway's position in support of the two-state solution and its efforts to fund the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), according to the same statement.

Reconstruction of Gaza

In the same context, Egypt stressed on Sunday the "need to begin as soon as possible" implementing early recovery and recovery and reconstruction plans for the Gaza Strip. This was during phone calls between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badry Abdel Aty and his counterparts in Italy, Antonio Tajani, Spain, José Manuel Albares, Germany, Johan Vadephul, and Canada, Anita Anand.

According to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Abdel Aati discussed "the ongoing preparations for Egypt to host the International Conference on Early Recovery, Reconstruction and Development in Gaza" during the call.

He stressed the "need to begin implementing early recovery and reconstruction plans for Gaza as soon as possible, within the framework of a comprehensive vision that preserves the rights of the Palestinian people and is in accordance with the Arab-Islamic reconstruction plan and US President Donald Trump's Middle East peace plan."

Egypt is seeking to implement a reconstruction plan adopted by the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation last March. The plan, which will take five years and cost approximately $53 billion, is expected to be implemented.

The ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, which took effect on October 10, is based on the Trump plan, which, in addition to halting the war, calls for the release of Israeli prisoners, a ceasefire, the disarmament of Hamas, and the entry of aid into the Strip.

According to the statement, the foreign ministers of the four countries expressed their "appreciation for the pivotal role Egypt plays in supporting regional stability," noting their "keenness to continue coordination with Cairo on issues related to early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza, and within the framework of preparations for the international conference that Egypt intends to host next November."

The ceasefire agreement ended a war of extermination launched by Israel with US support on October 8, 2023, which left 68,159 dead and 170,203 injured, most of them children and women, and destroyed 90 percent of the civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.
