Dallas Mavericks extend coach Jason Kidd's contract

The Dallas Mavericks have extended head coach Jason Kidd's contract by several years, after the 52-year-old led the team to two NBA Finals appearances in the last four seasons.

“J-Kidd's track record in basketball is one of the best in the game,” Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison said on the NBA website on Wednesday.

"In every situation, he has consistently proven himself to be the right person to lead the Mavericks. He has the ability to develop the best talent in the league and build strong relationships with players to bring out the best in them."

Kidd joined the Mavericks as head coach in 2021, replacing Rick Carlisle.

In four seasons, he recorded 179 wins and 149 losses with Dallas, including two deep playoff runs, culminating in the 2024 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics.

During his nine-season NBA head coaching career with Dallas, the Brooklyn Nets and the Milwaukee Bucks, Kidd compiled an overall record of 362 wins and 339 losses.

He is known as a coach with a communicative approach and emphasizes player character development.

Before coaching, Kidd was one of the best point guards of all time.

Kidd, who also played for the Dallas Mavericks and led his team to the 2011 NBA championship alongside Dirk Nowitzki, capped a 19-year career in the league with a reputation as a brilliant leader on the court.

After retiring in 2013, Kidd immediately turned to coaching, leading the Brooklyn Nets to the second round of the playoffs in his first season.
