Google invests in gas-fired power plants for data centers

Google is reportedly investing by signing an agreement to support the development of a gas-fired power plant in Illinois, USA, called the Broadwing Energy Center to power its data center.

The power plant is said to be integrated with carbon capture and storage (CCS), a technology designed to filter carbon dioxide from smokestack emissions and store it underground to prevent greenhouse gases from building up in the atmosphere.

The technology should theoretically help prevent the planet from warming beyond the point where rising sea levels would make entire coastal communities uninhabitable and ocean warming would kill the world's coral reefs, among other disasters caused by climate change, The Verge reported Friday.

However, in reality, many still doubt CCS, especially regarding its technical feasibility and funding.
