Join the conversation: everyone is responsible for their own roof over their head
In the Issue, we pose a question or statement to our readers. Today: everyone is responsible for their own roof over their heads. Respond to this issue below.
A new count in 57 municipalities reveals nearly 29,000 homeless people . It's striking that a large group includes children. The count took place in Amsterdam, Eindhoven, and The Hague, among other cities. It also covered regions such as North Holland, the Valleiregio, and Maastricht-Heuvelland.
The figures show that many women also live on the streets. The cities of Amsterdam (13,000) and The Hague (7,200) have the highest numbers of homeless people. In the larger cities, these are often people without residency status. Amsterdam and The Hague are calling on the national government to implement a dispersal law for homeless families.
The new counting method (called ethos counting ) originated in Belgium and is conducted by Utrecht University of Applied Sciences and the Kansfonds (Channel Fund). Statistics Netherlands (CBS) also publishes annual figures on homelessness. This includes people receiving social assistance benefits, people with a postal address at a shelter, and probation service records.
Are people responsible for providing a roof over their heads? Or do you think the problem is far too big with such a large number of homeless people? What do you think needs to be done to solve this problem? Join the conversation and give yo
