Technology giant Meta is reportedly planning to cut around 600 positions in its AI (artificial intelligence) team.
This news was first reported by Axios, quoted from The Verge, Wednesday (22/10) local time, which stated that this cut would impact Meta's old Fundamental AI Research unit, also known as FAIR, along with its AI product and infrastructure division.
Despite the cuts, the company continues to recruit for its newly formed intelligence team, TBD Lab. Meta spokesperson Ana Brekalo confirmed the Axios report was accurate.
The report states that during the summer of 2025, Meta started a wave of AI hiring after investing US$14.3 billion (around Rp238 trillion) in Scale AI and hiring Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang.
Meta halted hiring a few months later and announced a restructuring that would focus on AI-related products and infrastructure. Meta's AI research team also scaled back with the departure of FAIR Leader Joelle Pineau earlier this year.
