North Sumatran wrestling athletes performed quite well at the 2025 National Martial Arts Games (PON) held in Kudus, Central Java, winning five silver and four bronze medals.
This achievement is a positive sign for the development of wrestling in North Sumatra, considering that at the 2024 Aceh–North Sumatra PON, they were only able to pocket three silver medals and five bronze medals.
North Sumatra Wrestling Team Manager Mangasi Simangunsong in Kudus, Thursday, expressed his appreciation for the athletes' efforts on the mat.
"All the athletes have demonstrated a high fighting spirit and brought pride to North Sumatra. Moving forward, we hope they will remain focused on training so they can perform even better at the 22nd PON NTB–NTT in 2028," he said.
Mangasi added that he hopes the positive results in Kudus will be a momentum for improving the development of wrestling athletes in North Sumatra.
"Currently, only eight wrestlers are enrolled in the North Sumatra KONI Intensive Development Program (PPI). Ideally, there would be 18 wrestlers from all classes for more comprehensive development and improved performance," he said.
