Recognize the early signs of vision problems in children

Children who frequently squint when reading, sit too close to the television or blackboard, and complain of quickly getting tired when looking into the distance, according to eye specialists, may be experiencing a vision disorder called nearsightedness.

"Many parents may often see their children sitting too close to the television, squinting while reading, or complaining of eye fatigue. These signs could be early signs of nearsightedness in children," said Dr. Artha Latief, Sp.M., in a press release on Wednesday.

The ophthalmologist from Bethsaida Hospital Gading Serpong explained that nearsightedness occurs when light entering the eye falls in front of the retina, not directly on it. As a result, distant objects appear blurry.

In children, this condition is usually influenced by the habit of staring at screens for too long, lack of outdoor activity, or hereditary factors.

If you find your child blinking frequently when watching television or using a gadget, complaining of headaches, and having difficulty seeing clearly from a distance, parents are advised to immediately take their child to an eye specialist.
