Susanto Megaranto beats Daniel Quison at the JAPFA Chess Festival

Indonesian chess player GM Susanto Megaranto defeated Filipino chess player GM Daniel Quison (2,420 FIDE Rated) in a grand master category match at the JAPFA Chess Festival 2025 which took place at the Multipurpose Building, GBK Senayan, Jakarta, Monday.

"I had prepared. Up until the 10th move, I saw a chance to win after Quizon mistimed his opening setup. I controlled the game from start to finish. He didn't attack. He just played below. He had no strategy. He didn't have the best move," Susanto said in an official statement on Tuesday.

Later, Susanto will still compete in the third and fourth rounds which will feature Rapid Chess or fast chess.

Competing in this category, Susanto admitted that it's a game he really enjoys. He hopes to win the match, but remains wary of Daniel Quizon, who is younger.

In the Women's Doubles match, Indonesian chess player WIM Shafira Devi Harvesa was again defeated by her opponent from Kazakhstan WIM Amina Kairbekova on the 32nd move.

Head of the Development and Achievement Division of PB Percasi Kristianus Liem said that Shafira still lacked focus in the final minutes of the match, resulting in frequent blunders and losses.

"Actually, Amina was a well-matched opponent for Shafira. However, due to frequent errors and blunders in the final minutes, Shafira had to concede victory," said Kristianus.
