According to the report, airport security personnel found narcotics in the player's luggage, approximately 36 grams of marijuana, during a routine inspection, which prompted the police to be called to the scene.
Williams was immediately arrested, while the player denied responsibility for the presence of the drugs, indicating that his business manager had prepared the bag before the trip.
The Dallas Mavericks declined to comment on the incident, and no official statement has yet been issued by the player or his legal representatives.
The report stated that Williams was on his way to attend to a family matter after being granted leave from the club over the weekend.
The 25-year-old player missed the team's last two games for personal reasons and was scheduled to return to participate in the upcoming Indiana match.
Although some U.S. states, including Texas, allow the use of marijuana for specific medical purposes, U.S. federal law still prohibits its possession or transportation, especially in airports and on aircraft under federal authority.
The incident comes at a time when the NBA has eased its policy toward cannabis, as under the new 2023 collective bargaining agreement, marijuana was removed from the doping control program, after the first violation had previously resulted in compulsory treatment, the second a $25,000 fine, and the third a five-game suspension.
It is worth noting that Williams, who played one season at the University of Arizona, made a difficult way into the professional league after trials with several teams in the G-League development league, before finally attracting attention last season with a good performance with the Mavericks, which earned him a multi-year contract last April.
