Trump's deputy backs down from entering Gaza, US delegation meets Netanyahu to discuss next phase of deal

This comes hours after the commission reported that Vance would arrive in Tel Aviv on Tuesday afternoon and intend to enter Gaza to review the progress of the ceasefire agreement. However, the commission later confirmed in a separate report that Vance "will only monitor the situation in the Strip remotely."

It suggested this was likely "through special screens at the Defense Ministry (Kirya) headquarters in Tel Aviv." The authority attributed Vance's refusal to enter Gaza to "security reasons."

For its part, the Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom reported that Vance will monitor the situation in Gaza "via a drone, and will not actually enter the Strip for security reasons."

Earlier Monday, Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Israel on the eve of Vance's arrival to discuss the next phase of the US plan to end the Gaza war.

The Washington Post quoted an unnamed source on Monday as saying that J.D. Vance will discuss with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan, the deployment of a multinational force in the Strip, and the disarmament of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

The second phase of Trump's plan to end the war in Gaza includes the deployment of an international peacekeeping force in the Strip, the withdrawal of the Israeli army, and the disarmament of Hamas.

According to the Israeli Broadcasting Authority, after landing at Ben Gurion Airport, Vance will head to the joint command headquarters of the US and Israeli armies in Kiryat Gat, southern Israel, which was recently established as part of President Trump's plan to implement the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

The channel said: "Hundreds of Israeli and American officers and soldiers work in this command, holding meetings on the post-war situation in the Gaza Strip and developing operational mechanisms to deal with any potential violations of the ceasefire, or with exceptional cases discovered within Gaza."

Their duties also include "following up on reports of violations, establishing a mechanism to prevent friction with foreign forces expected to enter the Strip, and monitoring and reconstruction issues," according to the same source.

On October 10, a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel went into effect. This agreement is based on the Trump plan, which, in addition to ending the war, includes a gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army, a mutual release of prisoners, and the immediate entry of aid into the Gaza Strip.

This agreement ended a two-year war of extermination waged by Israel on October 8, 2023, resulting in the martyrdom of 68,216 Palestinians, the injury of 170,361 others, and the destruction of 90 percent of the civilian infrastructure in the Strip.
