A team of researchers has revealed that a common type of spice, used in creamy Indian dishes, may help fight obesity and protect heart health

black cumin seed powder can help maintain a healthy weight and improve heart health. These seeds are commonly added to curries, breads, rice dishes, soups, and salads for their distinctive flavor

In a clinical trial conducted by researchers from Osaka Metropolitan University in Japan, 42 participants with high cholesterol levels were asked to take 5 grams daily of black cumin seed powder for eight weeks.

The results showed a significant decrease in triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol, while levels of HDL cholesterol increased, reducing the risk of heart disease and premature death.

Cellular experiments have also shown that black cumin seed extract inhibits the formation and maturation of fat cells, which contributes to the prevention of obesity.

Professor Akiko Kojima Yuasa confirmed: "This study strongly suggests that black cumin seeds are beneficial as a functional food for the prevention of obesity and lifestyle-related diseases."

This ingredient has long been used in traditional medicine for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its role in boosting immunity and improving metabolism. Future studies aim to evaluate its effect on insulin resistance in diabetic patients and on inflammatory markers.

The study results were published in the Journal of Food Science and Nutrition.
